A good felt hat is an investment in your look. With the right care, it holds its shape, keeps its color and looks sharp season after season. The good news is that felt hat care isn't complicated. A few simple habits make all the difference. Here's how to clean, store and protect your felt hat so it's ready for every Sunday service, dinner date and fall evening out.
Why Felt Needs a Little Extra Attention
Felt is made from fibers that are pressed and shaped into a crown and brim. That's what gives a felt fedora its rich, smooth finish and its structure. It also means felt reacts to how you treat it. Heat, heavy moisture, dust and rough handling can soften the shape, flatten the brim or leave marks. Treat it well, and a felt hat will reward you for years.
Handle Your Hat the Right Way
Most hat damage starts with how a hat is picked up. It's natural to grab a fedora by the pinch at the front of the crown, but doing that over and over can weaken the felt and eventually crack or misshape it.
- Pick it up by the brim. Hold the front and back of the brim with clean hands when you put it on and take it off.
- Keep your hands clean. Lotion, cologne and everyday oils transfer easily to light-colored felt.
- Put it on from the front to the back. Settle it gently instead of pulling it down hard, which stretches the sweatband.
How to Clean a Felt Hat
For everyday upkeep, a soft-bristle hat brush is your best friend. Regular brushing removes dust before it settles into the felt.
- Brush counterclockwise. Starting at the front, brush around the hat in a counterclockwise direction, following the nap of the felt. Use light, steady strokes.
- Brush the brim top and bottom. Dust collects on the underside of the brim too.
- Lift light marks with a dry sponge. A clean, dry cosmetic sponge or a felt-safe cleaning sponge can lift surface smudges. Work gently and test a hidden spot first.
- Spot clean with care. If something spills, blot it right away with a clean, dry cloth. Don't rub, and don't soak the felt.
A quick brush after each wear keeps a dark felt like black or navy looking deep and rich. If a hat has a serious stain or has lost its shape, it's best to take it to a hat professional rather than trying an aggressive fix at home.
What to Do If Your Hat Gets Wet
A little rain happens, especially on fall evenings in Texas. If your felt hat gets wet, don't panic and don't reach for a hair dryer.
- Shake off excess water gently.
- Turn the sweatband out so it can dry and doesn't shrink against the crown.
- Rest the hat upside down on its crown, or on a hat stand, at room temperature.
- Let it air dry completely, away from direct heat and sunlight.
Direct heat can shrink felt and the leather or fabric sweatband, so patience is the key.
Reshaping the Crown and Brim
If the crown dents or the brim starts to curl the wrong way, gentle steam can help. Hold the hat a safe distance from the steam of a kettle or garment steamer for a few seconds until the felt becomes slightly pliable, then use your fingers to reshape the dent or brim. Let it cool and set in place. Go slowly, keep your hands safe from the steam and never let the felt get soaked.
How to Store a Felt Hat
Good storage is what keeps a hat looking new between wears.
- Rest it upside down on its crown or on a hat stand so the brim keeps its shape. Laying a hat flat on its brim for long periods can flatten it.
- Use a hat box for longer storage. A box protects against dust and keeps the hat from getting crushed in the closet.
- Keep it cool and dry. Avoid hot cars, sunny windowsills and damp spaces. A car dashboard in a Texas afternoon is one of the fastest ways to ruin a good hat.
- Don't stack hats. Stacking puts pressure on crowns and brims.
Keep the Sweatband Fresh
The sweatband is the part of the hat that does the hardest work. After wearing, turn it out and let it air for a bit before storing. This lets moisture escape and helps the hat stay fresh. If you wear your hat often, rotating between two or three hats gives each one time to rest.
Felt Care by Season
Fall and winter are prime felt season, and that's when your hats get the most wear. Brush them more often, keep an eye on the weather and store them properly between outings. When spring and summer arrive and you switch to straw, give your felts a final brush and store them in boxes until the cool weather returns.
